Behold The Hounds of Geevor. These whimsical dogs are the work of British artist David Kemp, who uses found objects to create his art, “particularly discarded remnants of the mining industry in his area, on the Tinner’s Coast in Cornwall. Twenty years ago, he was alerted about a mountain of old boots that were to be buried, so he salvaged them.”

A friend, working on the maintenance staff at Geevor, watched a mechanical digger burying a pile of redundant miners boots, & gave me a shout, I drove over & filled my pickup with the discarded boots, not knowing what I might do with them. This discarded footwear was to become THE HOUNDS OF GEEVOR.

“Relics of a vast subterranean workforce that rarely saw the light of day, each of these Hounds fed up to three & a half families (seven boots per dog). Released from their underground labours, they now wander the clifftops, looking for a proper job”

David’s awesome rubber hounds proved so popular that he was commissioned to cast them in bronze for downtown Redruth in Cornwall. And he continues to make delightful dogs out of foorwear. Follow David’s blog to see more.

I’m looking to make my dad some socks for father’s day, only I’ve never made socks before. Can anyone direct me to an easy to follow pattern for first timers?

I’m not a sock knitter but I’ll ask around for ya! Hey followers! Anyone know any good patterns?

Not exactly socks but slippers. You knit giant-sized socks out of feltable wool and then deliberately felt ‘em (hence -> quick and easy - and mistakes aren’t as obvious). My dad LOVED his so much I had to make him a 2nd pair. I miss him so much - Hug your Dad for me!

Finally got up the nerve to give this away. It’s my first handspun FO and it’s lovely and I love it … but it’s itchier than Satan’s crab-infested taint and I absolutely cannot wear it.

Have you ‘working in’ some cream rinse post-washing (like you put on your hair) and then rinsing (and drying); it can make a big difference in itchy wool (assuming it’s got at least some wool in the yarn…) Just a thought…

Does anyone know if a good video to show you how to change colors when knitting?

Went to a fabulous Knitting retreat in Blowing Rock, NC this past weekend - so many lovely knitters in one place!

Saturday night we got to hear about a new ‘institute’ that’s just getting started and I think the whole idea is just wonderful - it’s really sad how knitting and/or crocheting, which enriches so many lives, has not been respected as an ‘art’ in the U.S.A. (They said that often ‘fiber art shows’ will specifically exclude anything that has been knitted or crocheted - it’s not REAL art!)

Now a second child dies. I can’t comprehend this level of evil. I can’t even comprehend it.

Evil, perhaps - but given our culture of ‘choice’ - who are we to judge? Human lives are too d*mn cheap.

Is there a chart generator floating out in the ether somewhere where I would be able to type in what words I want to do in different colors and have it give me a handy chart to knit from? IE, will it make a chart for me so I’m not copy-pasting letters one at a time into Paint or shading in graph paper one cell at a time?

Microsoft Excel works for me. I set up the ‘cells’ to be roughly .25” x .25” (I think there are actually ‘grid’ templates in the program and/or ‘create your own graph paper’ templates on their website). I use the fill background with color tool (along with the color selector) and/or use letters/symbols IN the boxes to chart out designs:

DIY Bra Fitting Post from EPBOT here. I thought I was one of the 10% who knew my correct bra size - now I’m not so sure. There is a link on the EPBOT site on how to really measure yourself to get the right band and cup size and a link to a photos and a video on the “scoop and swoop” method.

A someone whose bras have NEVER fit right, I’m skeptical - but will still take a look. (I don’t care HOW many tutorials they make - they LIE!!!)
